North side water release is intentional
Water flowing down College Parkway this week originates from the temporary retention basin at the end of Vicee Canyon.
After seeing the water moving down the street and noticing barriers to keep the water from diverting from its prescribed route, “I was wondering what the noise was,” said LeeAnn Saarem, who lives in the neighborhood. “It was the water being pumped out of the basin.”
Learning Nevada’s history from a camel, horse and Gila monster
A camel, a horse and a Gila monster were guest instructors Thursday at Bordewich-Bray Elementary School, teaching students about Nevada’s history and its relevance in today’s world.

“This is one of the most impressive programs that I’m aware of,” State Archivist Guy Rocha, who helped coordinate the Nevada Day celebration. “These kids are having a wonderful experience, arguably a lifetime experience. I don’t know of anything comparable.”
Update: This year, students visited 18 stations around the school to learn about different aspects of Nevada history, including horse-drawn wagon, Indian baskets, Basque history, state animals, minerals and forestry. For photos see page A5 in Friday’s edition.
