SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: A grand canyon of a trail for Carson City

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Muscle Powered and all those responsible for the development of the Ash Canyon to Kings Canyon Trail. The 7-mile trail connecting Ash and Kings canyons in the hills west of Carson City was officially opened last weekend with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

SILVER DOLLAR: This is late in coming since it was already done at Thursday’s Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting, but we’re also going to recognized the Carson City Fire Department and the Carson City Public Works Department for having the “back” as was said at the meeting of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office after the death of Deputy Carl Howell. Again, it’s obvious numerous agencies, the entire community and country for that matter have pulled together in support of the Sheriff’s Office, Howell and his family.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the medical staff of Carson Tahoe Health for offering the Jack L. Davis Memorial Scholarship fund to benefit Western Nevada College students, in memory of the orthopedic surgeon who passed away earlier this year.

The memorial scholarship, administered by the Western Nevada College Foundation, is designed to support and encourage the science professionals of tomorrow by contributing $1,000 each year to two Western Nevada College students pursuing degrees in the sciences.
