Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels: Muckers find silver, a championship
The Nevada Appeal’s “Silver Dollar” and “Wooden Nickel” feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: It was raining silver on the Comstock last week after the Virginia City girls basketball team won the 1A state title in Reno.
It was the first state title for the Muckers, who defeated McDermitt 49-28.
“The girls set a goal last year of wanting to have a shot at a state title. This year they didn’t want to leave any doubt. I’m proud of them,” said Muckers coach Todd Hess, who led the team to a 29-2 record.
The Muckers were led by Northern Nevada 1A player of the year Gigi Glogovac who scored 18 points in the championship game.
“I knew I needed to come out one last time (and get it done),” Glogovac, a senior, said.
WOODEN NICKEL: Earthquakes have been in the news a lot lately. First Haiti then Chile were both hit by large quakes. Then last week a report by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology came out that the chance of a significant earthquake rocking Carson City over the next half century is on the rise, with a 70 percent chance a magnitude 6.0 quake will strike within 31 miles by 2060. Earthquakes are serious and there is no way of predicting when or where the next one might hit. While we hope the “big one” never comes, we urge everyone to be prepared.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends everyone have enough emergency supplies stored in their homes to last three days. Visit http://www.bt.cdc.gov/
