The Popcorn Stand: I’ll have a chance to be peeved about being nice and smiling
There are a lot of weird, unofficial holidays in every month and October is no exception. One holiday I have no desire to celebrate is moldy cheese day, which is Oct. 9.
Apparently on this day, you’re supposed to cut off the moldy edges of whatever aging cheese you have and eat it. No thanks.
I also learned that not only is Oct. 31 Halloween, but it’s also Increase Your Psychic Powers Day, which I will also take a pass. Although there seems to be a need for this day in my opinion, based on the performance of most psychics.
There’s also Leif Erickson Day on Oct. 12. Of course, Leif Erickson is recognized as the first European to set foot on North American soil. My guess is Leif Erickson Day has its share of controversy just as it’s celebrated in the same way as Columbus Day, which by the way is Oct. 10.
I also learned a joint resolution of Congress actually declared Oct. 9 as Leif Erickson Day. So why it’s celebrated on Oct. 12 this year, I have no idea.
Two of my favorite unofficial holidays I learned about in October are Do Something Nice Day on Oct. 5 and World Smile Day on Oct. 7.
Although I also like the idea in which a whole week has been given to pet peeves as the second week of October is Pet Peeve Week.
It’s probably for all those people tired of people doing nice things and smiling.
