We need to raise funds to pay for her fund-raiser

Carolyn DeMar and Maizie Harris Jesse

We will be holding a fund-raiser soon for Carolyn to pay for the Sharks Swimathon fund-raiser because she so joyously pledged $2 a lap for her granddaughter’s swim … joyous until she realized Lexie swam 120 laps and she owed them $240.

After she ponies up the money, she feels she needs $$$ to pay back her bank account … so we’re taking the names of those willing to help out, and suggestions for the kind of a fund-raiser it should be (a “drinkathon?” a “mudwrestlingathon?” a “riverdanceathon?” … she’s open to suggestions). Maizie suggests that the next time she pledges, she put a brake on the funding … that way M won’t have to listen to her lamentations (no sympathy there) … and congrats, Lexie …

Andy Harvey told us about a blonde sitting on a train reading a newspaper. The headline read, “12 Brazilian Soldiers Killed.” She shook her head at the sad news, then turned to the person next to her and asked, “How many is a Brazilian?”

Many happy returns to April and Frank Taylor on their recent marriage in Joliet, Ill. He says it’s all Norma Conway’s fault, since she was the one who gave a speech at Toastmasters saying how a man is marriage-material if he does nice things for his mate, like carrying out the garbage and helping around the house. He started doing those things, and April agreed to marry him. We do, however, notice that Joliet is the location of one of our big federal prisons, and wonder if that had any bearing on April agreeing to a “life sentence?”

The latest hot news we’ve picked up on these days, is that Max Baer is considering putting his Beverly Hillbilly’s Casino next to the terminal of the new V&T railroad east of town. That sounds like a great idea … people could stay in the hotel, dine, ride the train, take in a movie, gamble … an all-in-one destination resort. We hope the rumor is true, ‘cuz it shor wud be fun … and would help the Carson City coffers considerably …

Thank God, Ken Fraser is back from vacation … he told us that he saw Father Jeff and Pastor Stan out fishing on the side of the road. They had a sign that said, “The End is Near … turn around before it’s too late!” One driver yelled at them, “Leave us alone, you religious nuts.” Just then they heard a big splash. They looked at each other and Father Jeff asked, “Stan … do you think we should have written ‘Bridge Out’ instead?”

The generosity of the American people has been legendary during the terrible hurricanes along the Gulf Coast … however, we heard of one man who was volunteering in Houston who encountered a lot of people not saying “thanks,” wanting Cokes, not water, and dissing ham sandwiches with, “We want McDonald’s.”

The corker came when he saw two women volunteers struggling with air mattresses, so he turned to some young men standing idly nearby, and asked them if they would help the women. “No f—ing way … we lost everything … you help us!” With that, he put down the water he was handing out and returned home … smart man … let’s hope this story is balanced out by those who are glad to be alive …

Also coming to visit were Margaret Hardeman Montes and her sister, Virginia Ramirez, now of Deerfield Beach, Fla. They came for their Dad’s 80th birthday and to see “The Foreigner,” PPI’s current production at the Brewery Arts Center. Sure was great to see them …

What the devil is a “charrette?” T’aint in the dictionary (apparently it’s a French word for “cart” and is used by architectural types for God only knows what), but it’s what Carson City held last week to get input into what “downtown” should look like. For this they spent $90,000 on consultants … geez, we’d have told them the same thing for half the money … maybe even a quarter …

“Crazy for You,” WNCC’s terrific musical, will be held again this weekend at the Community Center … 445-4249 … lots of tap dancing and great songs; also, “The Foreigner,” is on this weekend at the Brewery Arts Center … 883-1976 … lots of laughs to celebrate their 40th season … just don’t tell us there’s nothing to do around here …

Maizie was looking across the street from the Ross Clinic last week at the Parole and Probation parking lot … someone had left their car lights on, so she called (it was her good deed for the week) and told them. A minute later, a man came out, turned the lights off, and waved “thank you.” That was nice …

DeeAnn Parsons tells us about the kindergartner who told his teacher he’d found a cat, but it was dead. “How do you know the cat is dead?” she asked. “I pissed in its ear and he didn’t move,” he said. “WHAT?” she exclaimed excitedly. “Yeah, I leaned over and went “pssst” into his ear, and he didn’t move, so I think that he’s dead.” (And to think you thought this was going to be racy … )
