Out & About with Kim Riggs: Introducing new high school strings class

Kim Riggs
For the Nevada Appeal

Carson Mall will host a music performance and discussion about a new String Orchestra class to be offered at Carson High School in fall 2010.

The free event will show the public a sample of what is being offered. Carson City Symphony’s Education Director Sue Kitts, violinist, and Jacki Montgomery, guitarist, will perform. Kitts will answer questions about the class, and a representative from Play Your Own Music will discuss instrument rentals.

“Students can join the fun as they explore classical, folk, and jazz music while polishing their skills as string players. The course will challenge all levels, from beginning to advanced students, with great music chosen to enhance creativity and teamwork,” Kitts said.

Beginning in the fall, the string orchestra ensemble will be open to all orchestral string players – violin, viola, cello, and contrabass – regardless of experience. Home-schooled students as well as public-school students are eligible. With all the budget cuts coming to education please come and show your support for the students who want to have choices in their educational pursuits. Children need ROTC, athletics and music programs. Be their voice.

March Madness Bargain Book Sale

The Friends of the Carson City Library is to support and promote the purposes and activities of the library and its community. They continue to be a sponsor of the National Library Week held annually in April, the Summer Reading Program for youth in June, and the Oktoberfest each October. Every year, they organize and conduct at least six book sales. Most are held in the auditorium of the library. The March Madness Bargain Book sale is right around the corner.
