Safe Grad seeks volunteers

There is no school Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Thank you to all of our men and women in uniform who have served or are serving in the United States military.

Last week was a huge one athletically for Carson High. Both track and swimming state were on Saturday. We fell just short on taking home some hardware in swimming, but I know our swimmers gave it their all and we couldn’t be any prouder.

Track also stepped up to the state challenge and brought home four medals, including the silver in the 3200 relay.

All the people who qualified for state and regional times in both track and field are most certainly doing Carson High well.

Thank you for representing our school with such pride!

There are only nine days left of school. Students will be studying hard and making sure they have great grades to finish the year strong.

(Report submitted by Kyle Kunz, public relations officer for the 2013-2014 school year.)

Congratulations to Luke Szatmary for placing fourth in the area level Rotary Competition last Saturday at the Sparks Nugget. Luke’s speech was a crowd favorite and incorporated more humor than any other speaker.

Next week, the Carson Debate team will hold elections for officers next year and begin planning to build upon the success of this season.

Congrats to Mr. Mobley and his students on a very successful speech and debate year.

CHS library books checked out to any students or staff are due to the library by Wednesday.

Senators, the publications staff will be collecting orders for the 2013 CHS Carneta in the north foyer and by the main entrance through Wednesday. Yearbook distribution is May 30. Skip the long lines and order your book during this final week. Yearbooks are $80.

CHS teachers Dana Fleming and Julie Koop are working with EF Tours and have arranged a trip to England in June 2015 for students. If you’d like more information, such as specific dates and cost of the trip, please come to a parent meeting on at 6 p.m. in room 219 at CHS.

This week’s spotlighted senior is Emily Gould.

She has a weighted grade-point average of 4.32. Emily has served as a member of the Carson High School Link Crew, Student Senate, Accreditation Student Committee and the Addicted to Life Campaign. Emily was a member of the B2 We the People Honors Government team that competed back in the fall in the school’s competition.

Also, for her senior project, Emily wanted to focus on helping others, and became a companion to a woman with Alzheimer’s. Both benefited greatly from the experience. In the fall, Emily will attend the University of Nevada, Reno where she will major in nursing.

Angila Golik is a government and sociology teacher at CHS and a member of Senator Pride.
