Skull found near where missing man disappeared

ELKO, Nev. – Searchers think they have found the grisly answer to the mystery of a California man missing more than a month in a remote section of Elko County.

A human skull found along the Owyhee Desert on Wednesday is believed to be that of Dennis Dorsey, 49, and all but confirms he was killed by a mountain lion.

What was left by the lion probably was devoured by coyotes and other scavengers in the rugged cliffs, according to Sheriff Neil Harris.

He said the find came as searchers combed game trails in an area known as prime lion habitat.

Dorsey, of Walnut Creek, was reported missing by his wife almost a month ago when he failed to return from a 10-day hiking and fishing trip.

He was last heard from Oct. 13 when he called to say he was headed toward the Idaho line to camp and explore.

His abandoned sport utility vehicle was found by an Elko County hunter over the weekend.

Harris said the skull and other evidence will be sent to California for positive identification.
