A limousine arrived at the home of Katie Estes on Saturday morning to whisk her away for a special 17th birthday celebration.
Her day included shopping at locations in Carson City and Douglas County, and a big party for family and friends at Red’s Old 395 in Carson.
“I had a lot of fun,” Katie said afterward. “Shopping is my favorite thing to do.”
Katie had a spree-worthy budget of $2,625 and was treated to clothes, a bed, a cell phone and a Wii gaming system, among other items.
Doctors discovered the Gardnerville teen and Douglas High School junior had Hodgkins disease, a form of lymphoma, just before Christmas 2006. She had to undergo months of chemotherapy an d radiation treatments to recover.
She has been in remission for almost a year.
While she has bought some clothes since completing treatment, this was her first major shopping splurge, she said.
The entire outing was financed by the Make-A-Wish Foundation and various donations by an array of area groups and businesses.
