August 17, 1932 - August 15, 2022

Velma Jean Dickerson, age 89, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2022, in Reno, Nevada, two days before her 90th birthday. Velma was born to Roy and Opal May in Oklahoma on August 17, 1932. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Lloyd Dickerson, and her oldest daughter, Rae Dickerson, her sister, Juanita Cowen, and brothers Robert May, Leon May, and Ray May. Velma is survived by her daughter, Karen Dickerson; her sister, Barbara Silva; her sister-in-law and best friend, June May; and multiple nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Velma and Lloyd moved to Carson City, Nevada around 1970, where Velma subsequently became a real estate agent and broker.

She loved her work. Later, after her retirement, she continued to manage her rental properties in Carson City until she was at least 85. Velma loved all dogs, but most especially her daughter’s standard poodle, Bacchus. He loved her too, so much that he will also be buried with Velma. Velma loved to travel and stay active. One of her last trips was a train trip through Canada with her daughter and sister. She spent a lot of time at the Carson City Senior Center, where she enjoyed line dancing classes and other activities. As an avid walker, she never missed a day whether rain or shine right up until the last month of her life. Velma will be remembered for her infectious sense of humor and her ability to turn any stranger into a friend.

As per her wishes, she will be buried with her husband at Walton’s Funerals and Cremations, 1281 N. Roop Street, Carson City, Nevada. There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m., Friday, September 16, 2022. A Celebration of Life will follow at Great Basin Brewing Company, 302 N. Carson Street, Carson City, Nevada 89701.
