IIse M. Chelius

Ilse M. Chelius, 85, a cherished former longtime resident of Carson City, Nevada, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Finland, Ilse grew up spending time in both Finland and Sweden. She especially enjoyed the time she spent living in Sweden. In her early 20’s Ilse’s adventurous spirit brought her to the United States as an Au Pair. While captivated by the beauty of Lake Tahoe, she met Ronald Chelius. Their connection was immediate, leading to marriage just three weeks later.
Ilse initially worked as an ad writer at the Nevada Appeal newspaper before dedicating herself to raising a family with Ron.

During her time as a stay-at-home mother, Ilse showcased her entrepreneurial spirit and skill by starting a home-based seamstress business. This endeavor flourished, expanding from basic sewing to crafting custom dresses, uniforms, elaborate Halloween costumes, and intricate wedding gowns.

Life presented challenges when her husband, Ronald, a dedicated police officer, was tragically killed in the line of duty. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, Ilse returned to the workforce, taking a position as an accountant at Carson Furniture. Her strong work ethic and capabilities soon led to her promotion to the warehouse manager.

Later in life, Ilse found enduring companionship with Earl T. Laird, sharing 39 rich years together. They embraced life through extensive travel across the country, delightful winery tours out west, long trips up the Oregon coast and a mutual love for the outdoors. As talented skiers, they spent many weekends at Mount Rose and Heavenly ski resorts. During this time Ilse proudly became a U.S. citizen taking the oath with her family in attendance.

Ilse pursued her passion for art, creating beautiful scenic works that she lovingly shared with her family. She possessed a vibrant social spirit, enjoyed hosting gatherings, cooking, and was known for being fun-loving. Ilse had a deep affection for Lake Tahoe, creating treasured memories of weekend beach trips with her children and later her grandchildren. She and Earl
relished going dancing and loved throwing the Annual Nevada Day party at her home after the parade. Ilse was also an active member of the Swedish group of Nevada.

Following Earl’s passing in 2008, Ilse remained active, finding joy in gardening and maintaining her yard. In 2014, she formed a close and cherished friendship with Al Craig.

Ilse M. Chelius was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend. Her warmth, strength, and zest for life will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Ilse is survived by her children Toni (Eric) Simone, Shawn (Laura) Chelius, and Jason (Melissa) Chelius; her grandchildren Xander and Dexter Simone, Hayden (Ewelina), Ryan and Grant Chelius & Karly (Jacob) Randall and Mary (Luke) Curtice; her great-grandchildren Maja and Leila & Mia Ilse; her stepbrother Pelle (the late Anna) Koch; and her special longtime companion Al.

She is preceded in death by her parents Rudolf and Karin Kock and her sister Kathe (the late Jim) Byers.

A celebration of life ceremony for Ilse will be held at a later date in Carson City Nevada.
