Barnett’s homer keys Nevada baseball victory
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Nevada (8-5) juniors Brock Stassi and Brian Barnett combined to defeat CSU Bakersfield (6-8) 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hardt Field. With the victory the Wolf Pack snapped a two-game skid to improve to 8-5 on the season while the Roadrunners fell to 6-8.
Stassi (3-1) tossed seven shutout innings and struck out a career-high 11 to earn his third win of the season. He was originally scheduled to pitch on Sunday but took the mound a day early, in place of senior Chris Garcia, who is suffering from a sore arm.
Barnett, playing left field, hit the first pitch of the second inning over the right center field fence and that would be all Stassi would need as he silenced the CSUB bats allowing just six hits. Friday CSUB scored 13 runs and totaled 14 hits in a 13-8 win over the Pack.
Junior Jeremy Cole (2) saved his second game of the year as he retired all six hitters he faced in the final two innings of the game.
Barnett (2-for-4,R) and second baseman Joe Kohan (2-for-3) led Nevada with two hits each. Barnett drove in the only run of the game with his third home run of the game which ties him for the team lead. Six different CSUB hitters had hits in the game on the day.
The final game of the series is slated for noon on Sunday as the Pack will look to win the series.
