Calipari deserves to be raked over the coals

Darrell Moody

I was happy to see Bob Knight take Kentucky coach John Calipari to task for questionable ethics.

We all know that Knight has a bad temper and has done some horrible things like throwing a chair across the floor during a game and allegedly choking one of his former Indiana players. Transgressions to be sure.

But Knight always ran a clean program. He didn’t play with the gray area when it comes to NCAA rules. Heck he even would suspend guys for skipping classes even if they were eligible by NCAA standards.

Calipari has put two programs – UMass and Memphis – on probation and walked away scott free. Why didn’t the violations follow Calipari to Kentucky? Why couldn’t the NCAA take away scholarships for a few years as a result of Calipari’s indiscretions? Why penalize the schools that he left?

Even better why not suspend a coach for a specified amount of time if he breaks NCAA regulations? Wouldn’t that clean up the game a little bit?

The WAC is headed toward qualifying just one school for this year’s upcoming NCAA tournament. Idaho is one of the best teams in the conference and the Vandals have already lost three games. The only way I see the WAC getting a second team is if Nevada doesn’t win the regular-season title, but can win the post-season conference tournament on its own floor.

I may be in the minority but I like the idea of the Big 10, which actually has 11 teams, adding a team so it can have a post-season championship game in football. The conference has been turned down twice by Notre Dame.

Missouri doesn’t make any sense, but Cincinnati does because of its geographic location. Rutgers makes sense because you would get the benefit of the New York and New Jersey media which would obviously bring more media attention to the conference.

Speaking of Notre Dame, the NCAA needs to force them into a conference. I can’t believe that NBC hasn’t dropped the Irish football broadcasts by now.

I can’t believe the ratings are that great considering how bad the team has been in the last 10-12 years. Notre Dame isn’t anywhere close to being an elite program anymore.

It was interesting to see that the Raiders have gone to Charlie Frye instead of JaMarcus Russell to run the show until Bruce Gradkowski returns, and who knows if that will happen this year. Does this mean that the Raiders will get rid of Russell? I hope so. You need to be able to do more than throw the ball 60 yards to get by in this league. You have to be able to read defenses, have enough athleticism to escape pressure and have great accuracy. Russell has shown none of those abilities in his brief career.
