Cardinals defeat South Tahoe

The Carson Cardinals baseball team warmed up for the Doc Stewart’s Invitational in Roseburg, Ore., with an 8-3 win over South Tahoe on Tuesday at Ron McNutt Field.
Rob Valerius wen 3-for-3 with an RBI double and Ed Lovelace pitched two scoreless innings for the win.
South Tahoe took a 1-0 lead on three straight singles in the second inning. But with runners at first and third and one out, Nick Smallman picked off the runner at first and got a flyball to escape the jam without any more damage. Smallman allowed the one run through two innings.
In the bottom of the second, Jack Jacquet singled and scored on Jeremiah Teeter’s triple. Teeter scored on an error to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
Jacquet allowed one earned run and struck out two over two innings. South Tahoe took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when it scored two runs without the benefit of a hit.
The Cardinals took a 5-3 lead in the fifth. Chris Ames and Valerius singled and Royal Good and Brooks Greenlee followed with RBI singles. Jeff Young reached on an RBI infield single to make it 5-3.

In the sixth, David Leid, T.J. Hein and Chris Ames allo walked and Leid scored on a wild pitch. Valerius hit an RBI doubled and Kevin Schlange belted an RBI single to finish the scoring.
Jack Maloney pitched a scoreless seventh after escaping a jam with runners at second and third and one out. Maloney induced a comebacker and a groundout to end the game and also had a strikeout.
Teeter tripled twice, Schlange had two hits and Leid added an RBI for the Cardinals, who will open in the Doc Stewart’s event at 10 a.m. Thursday.
