Carson City Red Devils advance to semifinals

Staff reports

Steve Mandoki scored five goals and Logan Ahl was clutch in the net as the Carson City Red Devils posted back-to-back victories to win the boys Division 4 championship at the Carson Valley Shoot-out youth soccer tournament Sunday in Gardnerville.

The Red Devils became the first Carson City team to win a boys Division 4 title in the tournament (previously known as the Kit Carson Shoot-out) which serves as the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Area 2 championships.

The tournament attracted a total of 86 girls and boys age group teams.

The Red Devils, an all-star team, defeated Truckee Lightning 3-2 in the semifinals Sunday morning at Stodick Park and then came back in the finals to score a 3-1 victory against South Lake Tahoe Avalanche.

In the semifinal against Truckee, Mandoki scored two goals, both on penalty kicks, and Joseph Schwedhhelm fired in the game-winner on an 18-yard shot with about two minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Mandoki scored three goals, the first one on a penalty kick, as the Red Devils won the final against

South Lake Tahoe. Ahl, who played goalkeeper for the Red Devils in both games Sunday, had a diving save of a shot that would have tied the score in the fourth quarter.

The Red Devils advanced to the semifinals by winning two games on Saturday.

Evan Thayer, Loren Wooldridge, Ryan Jesse, Mandoki, Ahl and Schwedhhelm all scored goals as the Red Devils secured a 6-2 opening-round victory against the South Lake Tahoe Ravens.

The defense was led by Jeremiah Teeter, Matt Neben and goalie Jesse.

In the second game, the Red Devils beat the North Tahoe Lakers 2-1 in a great defensive game. Enrique Mendoza scored on a header to tie the game 1-1. The Red Devils took a lead they would hold the rest of the way when Mandoki scored on a pass from Loren Wooldridge.

Jesse Aguilar and the Red Devil offense played a hard fought game, with Jeremiah Teeter, Matt Mitchell, Milce Trute, Jeffrey Van Epps, Edgar Gomez, and Tom Edwards holding off the Lakers.

The Red Devils are coached by Don Thayer and Winn Teeter.
