Carson girls cross country wins meet

The Carson High girls cross country team took the top three and five of the top six spots on its way to winning a three-way meet on Wednesday at a course near Western Nevada Community College.

Carson’s girls finished with 17 points to easily outdistance Reed (48) and Sparks (96). Meanwhile, the Senator boys finished second to Reed in the boys meet (24-34).

Shanna Sparks won the girls race, finishing the 5K course in 20 minutes, 20 seconds. Sheena Bonaldi placed second (22:10), Annie Brinson took third (22:32), Tiffany Halen placed fifth (23:28) and Janine Stone took sixth (23:28) for Carson.

Josh Corder also won the boys race for Carson, finishing in 18:00. Also for the Senators, Andrew Pederson placed third (19:07), Jason Strull took ninth (20:21), Doug Holderman placed 10th (20:44) and Ryan Turner took 11th (20:47).

Carson coach Todd Ackerman said he was pleased with his runners’ performance, since they have a meet coming up on Friday at the Lowry Invitational. He also noted that the WNCC course is a difficult one.

“It’s a little more difficult than people think,” he said. “Our girls seemed to take it pretty easy, but they ran pretty well on this course.”

DOUGLAS RESULTS

Taryn Joyce-Mendive broke the course record in winning the girls race at the Fallon Invitational. Joyce-Mendive finished in 19:23 on the extremely fast course. She led the Douglas girls to a third place finish while the Doulgas boys took second.

For the Douglas boys, Elliott McPeak placed fourth (17:21), Daniel Sipko took fifth (17:22), Andrew Hines took sixth (17:23), Greg Mullen placed ninth (18:09) and Lee Holdeman placed 12th (18:28). For the Tiger girls, Amber Cornelius placed seventh (21:19), Hillary Brower took 15th (22:45), Nicole Lopez took 20th (23:49) and Andrea Lindsay placed 22nd (24:14).
