Carson girls golf takes fifth

Staff Reports

The Carson High girls golf team showed that its opening performance was an abberation.

After struggling to a 10th place finish last week in the season opening Northern 4A tournament at Sierra Sage, the Senators came back to place fifth on Wednesday in the Northern 4A event at Sierra Nevada Golf Ranch.

Carson improved its score by 52 strokes, finishing with a 510 after struggling to a 562 last week.

“A little more realistic I think for us,” Carson coach Paul Croghan said. “I’d be happy with fifth or sixth every week.”

Carson was led by Ciarra Christian, who played more like herself after struggling last week. Christian shot an 89, which was likely good enough to place in the top 10, Croghan said. No golfer shot lower than the 80s, Croghan said.

“I felt going in she should be in the 80s in most of the tournaments we played,” Croghan said.

Lindsay Farnworth also had a solid score for Carson with a 93. Elizabeth Rankl shot 100, Amanda Carvin fired 109, Megan Good shot 119 and Erica McAfee had a 125 for the Senators.

Croghan said he expects Rankl to improve as well and hopes that Christian, Farnworth and Rankl will all consistently finish under 100.

Making the scores more impressive was that Carson finished better on a more difficult course in Sierra Nevada than Sierra Sage. “The greens are a lot trickier and quicker,” Croghan said.

Galena won for the second straight week with a 456. The Grizzlies were followed by:

Elko 485, South Tahoe 491, Reed 491, Carson 510, Wooster 517, Reno 531 and Douglas 534.
