Carson girls finish fifth at state skiing championships

The Carson High School girls ski team took a combined fifth-place finish in the NIAA Class 4A State Championships Sunday at Mt. Rose Ski Resort.
After high winds postponed Saturday’s giant slalom event, the Senators were led by Kacey Potter (14th place, 66.18 seconds) to finish ahead of sixth-place Damonte Ranch (320 points).
Tahoe-Truckee took first as a team with 473 points, followed by South Tahoe (401), Reno (400) and Galena (389).
Reed’s Jessie Eiting took first in the GS with a combined time of 60.61.
Nicole Carlevato finished 21st (73.90) for Carson, who had five other skiers place: Katie Carter (28th, 76.82), Krissie Gunn (39th, 81.86), Tina Midboe (47th, 89.01), Katie Carelvato (49th, 91.41) and Rebecca Robertson (51st, 93.87).
“The significance of a team is not the position we ended up with, but in what we long to attain – many more opportunities to make it state in the future,” said first-year Carson coach Adrienne Garbiel.
Carson had two competitors in the boys competition -Spencer Brinson and Clay Hollett. Brinson finished 11th with a combined time of 66.58 and Hollett came in 43rd, with a 79.39.
Incline’s Sean Higgins (62.42) and Nels Hansen (63.10) finished first and second, respectively, for the boys.
South Tahoe’s Joleen Ferguson (65.27) led the Lady Vikings with a sixth-place finish, followed by Areina Thomas (16th, 67.70), Kelsey Henderson (23rd, 75.56), Melissa Ewing (25th, 76.07) and Aimee Pitcher (34th, 81.15).
Galena’s Allison Smith led the Lady Grizzlies (13th, 66.03), followed by Ellie Webster (15th, 67.25), Erin Bassney (24th, 75.77), Renee Short (32nd, 79.87), Amanda Devenvenzi (33rd, 80.11), Marin Sauer (44th, 87.56), Jenny McClellan (48th, 89.50) and Ellyn Morrill (0th, 92.38).
Kayla Raw led Damonte Ranch with 20th-place finish (73.87), followd by Kelsey Raw (38th, 81.88).
