Carson golf wins Northern 4A event

Staff Reports

The Carson High golf team spent the last week-and-a-half fine tuning its game. Consider the Senators tuned up.

Carson won a Northern 4A tournament on Thursday at Elko, giving Galena its first loss in league match play in two years. The Senators finished with a 389 to outdistance second place Galena, which had a 396. Galena was followed by Reno (397) and Fallon (401).

Tim Hohl finished second in the individual standings for Carson, firing a 3-over-par 74. Hohl finished one stroke behind low score medalist Greg Wenzel of Sparks, who shot a 73.

Also for Carson, J.T. Cockerill placed fifth with a 77 and Jeremy Nielsen and Scott Jenkins were each in the top 10 as well with a 78. In addition for Carson, Derek Zastre fired an 82 and Bryan Upton shot an 83.

“This is a good win,” Carson coach Rod Butler said. “We’ve been working on some things to improve their game, improve their scores.”

Butler said the hard work that his team has put “I think really paid off this week. It was good solid golf through all six players. Nobody went for big scores.

“We’ve been working a lot the last week on controlling our shots, just playing smart golf. The whole day I saw our guys walking down the middle which was nice to see. They weren’t hunting for balls the whole day.”

Butler said his players came off the course saying they believe they can cut even more shots off their scores.

Another encouragin sign was the Senators played well through inclimate weather through the first eight holes. Carson has struggled through windy conditions in other tournaments this year, but played well through hail and wind on Thursday before the weather cleared.

Hohl overcame a slow start in which he bogeyed his first two holes. “He just played nice and consistent,” Butler said.

The last regulare season 4A tournament will be this Thursday at South Tahoe.
