Carson runners strong at Elko
The Carson High boys and girls cross country teams had another impressive day in a meet against Douglas and Elko on Wednesday in Elko.
The Senator boys beat Douglas 20-30 and Elko 20-41. Carson’s girls beat Douglas 24-37 and Carson 18-37.
All of the Carson boys improved their times from last year on the same course. Richard Shroy won the boys meet, finishing the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes even. Wade Smith took third in 17:45, Nich Schlager was fifth in 17:57, Caleb Carter was eighth in 18:13, Logan Philippi was 10th in 18:24, Ethan Graber ws 12th in 18:35 and Zack Mapes was 14th in 18:43.
Schlager improved his time from last year by a minute and despite running with a sore ankle, Carter was able to improve his time by 20 seconds.
For the girls, Yvonne Hollett was second in 20:13, Christy Works was sixth in 21:21, Jenny Mital was seventh in 21:29, Amanda Gordon was eighth in 22:01, Kat Vonrumpf was ninth in 22:38, Haley Ward was 10th in 22:46 and Kristen Dockery was 12th in 22:56.
Mital was among the more impressive runners for Carson as she was coming off a training session in which she completed the 12.5-mile Prison Hill course on Monday.
“They ran really well,” said Carson coach Pete Sinnott about his runners. “We’ve been training hard, a lot of miles.”
Sinnott said his team has been gearing up for the high-powered Stanford Invitational, one of the West Coast’s top meets, to be held on September 29.
