Carson second in Northern 4A golf opener
John Chirila led a trio of Carson High School golfers who shot in the 70s as the Senators captured second-place in a Northern 4A conference season opening match Monday afternoon in Reno.
Chirila shot 5-over par 77, Nick Zappin 78 and Toby Steele 79 to help the Senators card a team total of 408, five strokes behind match host Reno at Washoe Golf Course. Galena’s Bryson Young earned medalist honors with his 1-over 73.
Carson coach Paul Croghan was pleased with the results on a day when wind and cold prevailed.
“I thought anything around 400 would be pretty good under those conditions,” Croghan said. “And Washoe is not an easy course to play on the best of days.”
Josh Bratzler and Steve Prim both shot 87 to round out Carson’s team effort. Nick Carlson shot a non-scoring 91.
Reno led the team scoring with its 403. McQueen was third at 421, Galena fourth at 425 and Douglas fifth at 428.
The second-place finish also put Carson one step toward securing a team berth in the Northern 4A zone tournament in May. The top eight finishers in the regular season conference matches will qualify for zone.
“The main thing was that we picked up 12 points for second-place,” Croghan said. “We’re just trying to qualify for zone right now.”
The Senators compete at the Pahrump Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
