Carson Solons win tournament
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE – The Carson Middle School girls 8th grade basketball team set a trap Sunday afternoon – and it worked.
A full court trapping press, that is, helped trigger a second-half surge that carried the Carson Solons to a 33-28 victory against Foresthill from Auburn, Calif., in the Les Clifton Memorial Tournament championship game at South Tahoe Middle School.
Ciarra Christian, Katie Kotter and Tabitha Adams played up front on the press and the Solons held Foresthill to one point in the fourth quarter.
Carson went on to win its fourth straight tournament game and improved its season record to 26-1.
“That was a tough game. They had only lost once all season coming into this game,” Carson assistant coach Jeff Rispin said.
Foresthill led 9-4 after one quarter and was on top 27-25 at the end of three quarters. Then Carson’s press began to take its toll.
“I think they only got off three shots (in the fourth quarter),” Rispin said. “The kids played great.”
Adams also scored 11 points to lead Carson offensively, while Christian added nine points and Ashley Mather eight. Kotter scored three points and Jennifer Laaker two to round out Carson’s scoring.
The Ron Tamori-coached Solons play again Wednesday against Swope Middle School. The team won its Tah-Neva League championship with a 12-0 record and lost only by a one-point score against Winnemucca in September.
