CHS volleyball falls to Damonte; golfers head to Regionals

Damonte Ranch took the momentum with an 11-0 run during game 1 of Wednesday night's Sierra League volleyball matchup against Carson and never looked back.

The Senators came out aggressive in the first game. Carson took an early 10-3, before the Mustangs rallied and took a 14-10 lead. Carson couldn't cut the lead, losing 25-19.

Carson had a 10-7 lead in the second game, before Damonte would tie the game. The teams traded points with Damonte leading 16-15. The Mustangs went on a run to take a 20-16 lead before winning 25-19.

In the final game, the teams traded points until Carson turned an 18-16 deficit into a 20-18 lead. The Senators couldn't close it out with Damonte finishing the game on a 6-0 run.

Damonte improved to 3-1 in Sierra League. Carson fell to 2-3. The Senators are leaving Thursday for San Diego to play in a tournament this weekend.

Carson golfers head into Regionals with win

While technically not league champions, the Carson High girls golf team can effectively consider itself a co-league champion.

Carson won the final abbreviated Sierra League Tournament of the season at Reno's Arrowcreek on Wednesday. Due to the weather the tournament was limited to nine holes.

CHS won with a 179 while Manogue finished second with a 189. The two teams tied for first in the overall standings for the league title as each team won three tournaments on the year. Manogue won the tiebreaker based on total strokes played 1,995-2,000.

Carson's Jill Beglin was the low score medalist on Wednesday with a 35 while her sister, Karen Beglin finished second with a 39. The other two scoring players for Carson were Sophia Taggert with a 54 and Gabby Montes with a 51. Also for CHS, Sarah Wiggins fired a 58 and Kassidy Cooley had a 66.

CHS now heads to the NIAA Northern 48 Regionals Oct. 10 and 11 at Reno's Sierra Sage Golf Course. The top two teams will advance to the State Championships to be held Oct. 15 and 16 at Dayton.
