Carson wrestlers finish second
Carson High’s wrestling team finished second at the Kiwanis Spring Creek Invitational, which ran Friday and Saturday.
The Senators finished with 188.5 points, 5.5 points behind first-place Lowry.
“Overall we did awesome,” Carson coach Tim McCarthy said. “If we had a couple more pins we could have won.
“Everybody we brought contributed point-wise. it was nice to see everybody get at least one win this weekend.”
Nick Schlager (135) brought home Carson’s only first-place trophy, knocking off Robert DeLeon of Nyssa, Ore., 14-2 in the championship match. Schlager had three pins in five matches.
Junior Valladares, Carson’s second wrestler to reach the finals, took second at 171. He lost 1-0 to Bishop Manogue’s Gary Albright.
“He wasn’t able to get any offense going,” McCarthy said. “It was one of those strategic-type matches where neither had much offense.”
Carson had two-third-place finishers – 112 – pounder Cole McCarthy and heavyweight Justin Barlow. Both wrestlers went 5-1. McCarthy lost to the eventual champion in the semifinals 9-2.
Luke Carter (189) and Pat Craugh (103) both finished fourth with 4-2 records. Ricky Ugarte (119) and Nicolas Garcia (145) went 4-2 and placed fifth.
