Carson wrestlers win title

Staff Reports

The Carson High wrestling team won its fourth straight title at the Albany Invitational in Albany, Calif.

Carson beat California powers Liberty and James Logan on its way to winning the crown. Carson finished with 220 1/2 points while Liberty had 201 points for second and James Logan had 154 points for third in the 20-team tournament.

Twelve Carson wrestlers placed and three Senators won titles: Eric Aguilera (112 pounds), Paul Carter (140) and Nick Shine (189).

While Liberty did have several wrestlers in a prestigious Southern California tournament, Carson coach Dean Schmanski said his team’s title was still impressive.

“Regardless we beat them by a first,” Schmanski said. “Each first is worth about 20 points.”

Placing second for Carson were freshmen Loren Wooldridge (145), Chris Ceccarelli (160) and Allen Wooldridge (215). Loren Wooldridge went unscored upon until the finals.

“That was pretty exciting for a freshman not to be scored upon,” Schmanski said.

Others to place for Carson were: Joe Roman, 152, third; Chris White, 130, fourth; Anthony Nunez, 171, fourth; Jason Klug, heavyweight, fifth and Kevin Riggin, 119, fifth.

After losing his first match, Chandler Brown went 4-1 to place seventh at 135. Since he lost his first match in the one-day event, the highest Brown could finish was seventh.

“To come back after losing his first match was quite an accomplishment for him,” Schmanski said.
