CHS girls fall; Falcon boys win league title
The Carson High girls basketball team stayed within range of high-powered Reno High for one half before the Huskies took control in the second for a 65-36 win in the first round of the Northern 4A playoffs on Wednesday in Reno.
Carson trailed 26-16 at halftime and CHS coach Doug Whisler said his team actually played well enough to be leading at halftime.
“In the second half Reno woke up and was hitting everything under the sun,” Whisler said. “They took it to us. It was a good experience for my girls to make it to the playoffs and see that level of competition.”
Bella Kordonowy and Trinity Beard each scored nine points and Abby Pradere and Madison Rabideau each added four points for CHS.
Sierra Lutheran boys win league title
After winning its first league title in school history the Sierra Lutheran boys basketball team moved to within one win of advancing to the State Tournament with a 70-39 win over McDermitt in the first round of the 1A Regional Playoffs on Thursday at Wooster.
Zane Warkentin scored 12 points, Thomas Mellum had 17 points and Nathan Waite added 14 points for the Falcons. Sierra Lutheran played Wells on Friday at Wooster and with a win, the Falcons would advance to today’s regional championship game and clinch a spot in the State Tournament.
The top two teams in the regional advance to state. The regional championship game is at 5 p.m. today at Wooster.
Sierra Lutheran clinched the league title with a 59-23 win over Excel Christian on Tuesday. The Falcons left no doubt they were on their way to winning the Western 1A crown when they jumped out to a 21-2 lead after the first quarter.
Quinn Cummings had 13 points and three steals, Logan Schinzing had 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals and Nathan Waite added 10 points and three steals for the Falcons.
“It was a very special evening for these senior boys tonight,” Sierra Lutheran coach Ben Walther said. I was proud of their teamwork and comradery. It was a good end to the regular season, especially winning the league for the first time in program history. Now on to the post-season.”
Sierra Luthera finished 9-1 in league.
Sierra Lutheran girls fall in playoffs
The Western 1A No. 4 seed Sierra Lutheran fell to the Eastern No. 1 seed McDermitt 60-23 on Thursday in the first round of the regional playoffs on Thursday at Wooster.
Amanda Almeida scored eight points and Kati Boogman added seven points for the Falcons. “The girls played hard and never quit,” Sierra Lutheran coach Danika Neal said. “I’m really proud of their effort tonight and all season.”
Sierra Lutheran beat Excel Christian 61-15 on Tuesday, advancing to the 1A regional playoffs as well by finishing fourth in league.
The Falcons outscored Excel Christian 19-0 to take a 48-11 lead after three quarters. Almeida had a huge game for the Falcons as she had a double double with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Mikayla Talkington also had a double double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
“This was a great end to our season at home, especially for our seniors Amanda, Taylor (Davison), and Melissa (Steele),” Neal said. “They have been invaluable leaders this year.”
