Nevada softball splits in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — Carson High graduate Jennifer Purcell had her 12-game hitting streak dating back to last season stopped when the University of Nevada softball team was no-hit in an 8-0 loss to BYU in its first game of the DeMarini Desert Classic on Friday.

Douglas High graduate Kali Sargent pitched four scoreless innings before the Cougars took control the game. Sargent was roughed up in the fifth inning when BYU scored all eight of its runs. Sargent was charged with six earned runs on seven hits through 4 1/3 innings in the five-inning game.

In its second game on Friday, Nevada came back to beat UTEP 6-1. No details from that game were available at press time.
