Community sports: Silver State Gymnastics strong in state event
Carson City’s Silver State Gymnastics had numerous outstanding efforts at the State Championships held in Reno this past weekend, led by Emily Lewis who won the state title on bars.
Lewis scored a 9.675 at level 7 to win the state title. The top 12 highest scorers are chosen for the Nevada state team to compete in the Regional Championships against other states. Lewis will compete for Nevada and its the second time she will compete in the event to be held April 26-28 in Reno.
Silver State’s level 7 team was the second highest finishing team from the North at the state event. Other results for Silver State were;
Junior A Division: Alyssa Matthies won first place on vault, beam, floor, and the all-around. Senior A Division: Hayley Williams was first on vault, bars, floor, second on beam, and first place all-around. Ali Maschke was second on bars, first on beam, and placed second all-around.
Senior D Division: Tabby Thompson was first on vault and floor, second on bars and beam, and won first place all-around.
The Xcel Gold team placed second in the state. The top six highest scorers in the senior division were chosen to represent Nevada at the Regional Championships to be held May 3-5 in San Diego. Williams, Maschke and Thompson will make up half of Nevada’s team at the regional event.
“An incredible feat and honor by itself,” Silver State coach Dave Lester said. “We obviously feel immense pressure knowing that so much is riding on our girls, but they are used to rising up in the face of pressure, and hopefully this won’t be any different.”
Silver State’s nonprofit booster club will hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for Regionals from 6 to 9 p.m. March 29 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Washoe Valley Golf Club being formed
A new golf club is being formed and is now accepting members. The club is called Washoe Valley Golfers and will be playing every Wednesday morning at Toiyobe Golf Club.
We’ll also have a monthly Away Tournament at nearby golf courses. While our members will be primarily senior men, we will not have an age limit. Our formats will be; Individual Stroke Play, 2 Man Best Ball, 4 Man 2 Best Ball, 2 or 4 Man Scramble. Our season will begin play on April 24 and run through October (weather permitting, of course).
