Dayton girls go to 8-0

SMITH – Jennifer Dillie was nearly untouchable, as the Dayton High School softball team posted back-to-back shutout victories at the Smith Valley Tournament on Friday and improved its season record to 8-0.

Dillie pitched a three-inning no-hitter and the Dust Devils blanked Incline 11-0 in the opening game, then the senior right-hander came back to throw three-hit ball over five innings in an 11-0 win against Pershing County in the second game of the round-robin tournament.

The Dust Devils play Virginia City today at 1 p.m., and a win in that game will put them in the finals – possibly against tournament host and defending 1A state champion Smith Valley. The championship game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Dillie struck out nine of the 10 batters she faced in Game 1, allowing only one Incline base runner on an error.

Meanwhile, the Dust Devils broke the game open by scoring nine runs in the third inning. Cayla Reese doubled two runs home while Maggie Fluharty drove in one run on a sacrifice and singled another run home in the third. Dillie also hit 2-for-3 in the game.

Dayton scored three runs in the first inning against Pershing County and then broke the game open with four-run rallies in the third and fourth innings.

Dillie allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked only one to pick up the win.

Reese hit 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs and Trista Julian 2-for-3 with four RBIs to lead the Dust Devils offensively. Carrie Kordonowy and Fluharty added two hits each, and Dillie went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
