Douglas boys advance to finals of tournament

Appeal Staff Report

The Douglas High boys basketball team advanced to the championship game of its own Carson Valley Classic with a 65-52 win over Manogue on Friday.

Douglas will play Laguna Creek, who beat Faith Lutheran 75-68 in overtime, at 3 p.m. today.

The Tigers and Manogue were tied 11-11 after one quarter before Douglas went on to take a 30-18 halftime lead. “We just kind of carried that through,” said Douglas coach Rob Streeter about his team being able to maintain control of the game.

Manogue could only become as close as nine points in the fourth quarter. Michael Gransbery scored 19 points and Keith Olson added 14 points. Olson also had a huge game on the boards with 19 rebounds.

Streeter also said his bench, including Joe Nady, who scored six points, continued to play well.

“He’s continued his pretty solid play,” Streeter said. “We’re continuing to use our depth.”

“Laguna Creek’s very athletic and they’re a scrappy bunch of kids,” Streeter also said about today’s finals. “It’s just another great test.”

Dayton turned up the defensive intensity as it led 29-12 at halftime and 39-20 after three quarters on its way to the easy win.

“Especially the first three quarters we were very good defensively,” Dayton coach T.W. Cunningham said.

Erik Hopper scored 11 points, Travis Wood had 10 points and Jacob Jones added nine points for Dayton, which will play Carson at noon today. “It should be a great challenge for us,” Cunningham said.
