Fallon needs help to make playoffs
October 16, 2018
If the Lady Wave volleyball team wants to continue its season past next week, it's going to need a little help.
After dropping last Tuesday's match to Fernley, Fallon rebounded with a sweep over North Valleys in Reno on Friday to stay one game behind Spring Creek for the sixth and final playoff spot with three matches remaining.
Because Spring Creek holds the tiebreaker, Fallon, which hosted Dayton on Tuesday, needs to win the remaining three matches and have Spring Creek lose once, or win the final two of three and hope the Spartans can lose two of three. Fallon hosts first-place and undefeated Truckee on Oct. 23 for Senior Night before finishing the season at Lowry on Oct. 25. Spring Creek has Fernley, Sparks and Elko left on the schedule.
The Lady Wave showed early against Fernley that it could beat its cross-valley rival for the first time in two years. Fernley held on to win the first game, 25-21, after Fallon battled back to take the lead late. Fernley won the second, 25-17, and coasted to a 25-15 win in the third to complete the sweep.
Sophomore Madison Whitaker led the team in kills with six and junior Karlee Hitchcock had five. Senior Taylor Ingram posted three kills.
Seniors Shelbi Schultz and Journey Martin each had an ace, and Whitaker finished with a team-high seven blocks. Schultz, Hitchcock and junior Mackenzee Moretto each had three. Ingram led the team in digs with eight, Schultz had four, and Hitchcock and senior Rylee Buckmaster each had three.
