Fernley athletes honored

Fernley High’s Matt Lambeth and Tara Zimmerman will be among Northern Nevada’s top 10 athletes to be honored tonight by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.
The awards dinner will be held at 6 p.m. tonight at the Lawlor Events Center. Ten Northern Nevada athletes — five boys and five girls — are honored for scholastic and athletic achievement and extra-curricular activities.
Other athletes honored are: Marie-Alix Cirac and Nevada Griffin, Virginia City; Matthew Alleman, Elko; Lauri Jo Smith, Spring Creek; Jacob Cohen, North Tahoe; Lowell Egan, McDermitt; Amanda Young, Austin; and Irena Yamboliev, Wooster.
Each award winner will receive a $500 savings bond.
Zimmerman has a grade point average of 3.95 and has lettered in volleyball, basketball, softball and track. She plans to attend the University of Nevada and pursue a career as an orthopedic surgeon. She also hopes to study abroad in Germany for one year.
She has been a member of student government, Honor Society and a Nevada Silver Scholar and is a member of her church youth group. Zimmerman also finds time to volunteer at hospitals, with campus beautification, tutoring and serving as an assistant swim coach.

Athletically, Zimmerman has made the NIAA all-state academic team for all the sports and seasons she has participated in.
Lambeth has a 3.95 G.P.A. In football, Lambeth made the all-state 3A team as a quarterback and defensive back and was also named first team all-state in basketball.
In addition, Lambeth was a standout pitcher and shortstop for the baseball team. Lambeth plans to play baseball in college and to major in business.
He participates in an elementary school mentoring program, community food drives and the Make-A-Wish Foundation and is a D.A.R.E. role model, a Little League umpire and an intramural basketball coach.
