Galena wins again at Reebok
Spurred on by a tenacious first-half defense, the Galena High School boys basketball team rode to a 65-42 victory against Mojave Monday afternoon at the Reebok Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas.
The win was the second in as many games at the 54-team Reebok tournament for the Grizzlies, who improved their season record to 9-2.
Today figures to be a more difficult challenge, however, as Galena faces the North Hollywood Huskies in an 11:45 a.m. contest at Green Valley High School.
“We play a very tough team. I saw them play the other night and they won by about 30 points,” Galena coach Tom Mauer said. “I was impressed with them. They have some shooters.”
Galena has already beaten one Southern California team in the tournament, using a strong second half to dispatch Campbell Hall of Hollywood on Saturday, 53-39.
On Monday, the Grizzlies jumped out to a 28-14 halftime lead and never looked back in a game played at Durango High School.
“They’re (Mojave) not bad; they’ve got some athletes. We just came out to play,” Mauer said.
Sophomore Joe Heaton scored 12 points to lead a balanced attack in which 10 players contributed. Dan Hickman also scored 11 points, all in the second half, and Sam Sikes added 10.
