Local roundup: CHS girls rout Wooster
Even though the Carson High girls basketball team steamrolled Wooster 50-8 on Tuesday at Morse Burley Gum, CHS coach Doug Whisler knows his team will have to play much better in the regular season finale at arch rival Douglas.
Carson led 12-3 after one quarter agaisnt Wooster and outscored the Colts 18-0 in the second quarter to take a 30-3 halftime lead. “We started out kind of slow,” Whisler said.
“I wasn’t really pleased with their play. They’ll have to step it up greatly the next two days. We need to really have two good days of practice.”
Carson enters Friday’s game at Douglas at 5-4 in the Sierra League while the Tigers are 6-3. A possible second place finish and first round home playoff game will be on the line when the two teams meet at 5:15 p.m.
The Senators will have to play without Lily Bouza, who’s out for the season with an injury. “It’s going to be extremely difficult without Lily,” Whisler said. Against Wooster, Camryn Quilling scored 15 points, Bella Kordonowy scored eight points and Camille Kordonowy, Naycy Alvarez and Tezia Boice all added six points.
CHS boys fall
The Carson High boys basketball team sustained another heartbreaking loss, falling to Wooster 44-41. Carson led 26-22 at halftime but Wooster outscored CHS 15-5 in the third quarter to take a 37-31`lead. “We fought hard but in the end it was too late,” Carson coach Jordan Glover said.
Carson was plagued by 10 turnovers in the third quarter. “We made too many mistakes,” Glover said. “Too many turnovers throughout the game.”
Lucas Vanbrow hit two key three-pointers and made a steal and scored on a layup to pull the Senators to within one wiht 40 seconds left before CHS fell just short.
Sierra Lutheran girls win
Sierra Lutheran rolled to a 40-11 win over Sage Ridge on Tuesday. Freshman Ava Mellus scored nine points, Amanda Almeida had nine points and eight rebounds, Kati Boogman had seven points and 11 rebounds and Mikayla Talkington had six points and 15 rebounds.

“The girls truly played as a team tonight with good ball movement and team defense,” Sierra Lutheran coach Danika Neal said. “Even while battling illness and injury, they had good fundamentals and finished their shots.”
Sierra Luthern boys win
Sierra Lutheran held off Sage Ridge for a 46-36 win. Thomas Mellum had eight points, three steals and two assists, Nathan Waite had nine points and two assists, Sean Emm added 10 points and five steals and Hunter Lamprecht scored eight points.
“It was a pretty sloppy game, dealing with sickness and injury, but the boys continued to fight hard and really pulled it out in the fourth quarter,” Sierra Lutheran coach Ben Walther said.
