Prep roundup: Galena boys soccer edges Carson
RENO — Galena completed a season sweep of Carson with a tough 2-1 win Wednesday afternoon.
Carson returns to action Saturday at Bishop Manogue at 10:45 a.m., and the Senators will either be in second or third place when they take the field depending on the result of Wooster’s Tuesday game.
“It was a great battle,” Carson coach Frank Martinez said. “It was a pretty even game.”
The Senators’ only goal came in the eighth minute, as last year’s leading scorer Rogelio Herrera tallied in the 8th minute. Herrera, according to Martinez, was recently cleared to play again. He appeared in a game earlier this season.
“He looked good,” Martinez said. “I didn’t want him to play the whole game.”
Galena tied the game in the first half, and then scored midway through the second half to take the lead for good.

The top five players on non-qualifying teams qualified for state but despite finishing 12th overall, Beglin just missed the qualifying score of 182 to make it to state.
Carson’s Camryn Aten also had a strong tournament, shooting a 97 at Washoe to finish 15th overall with a 191.
Reno (686) and Spanish Springs (706) took the top two qualifying spots for teams into the state event.
