Prep roundup: Heusser leads Dayton boys

FERNLEY — Brady Heusser finished in third place in 19:22 to lead the Dayton boys cross country team to a second-place finish at the weekly 1A meet.

Teammate Hunter Hatch, who stayed with Heusser for the first mile of the race, finished 10th in 19:46. Kobey Workman was 16th in 20:36, Jared Logan was 25th in 21:26, Austin Duarte was 29th in 21:50, Madsen Evans was 30th in 21:53 and Jason Logan was 31st in 21:54.

Virginia City splits

RENO — Virginia City (9-2, 4-1) split two matches with Sage Ridge, winning the opener 25-23, 25-21 and losing the nightcap 18-25, 16-25. In the opener, Kelsi Sequeira ahd three aces, four kills and eight assists and Bethany Fuller had four aces and five kills. In the nightcap, Sequeira had three aces, one kill and five assists, Fuller had one ace and three kills and Chelsea Nevin added four kills and three assists.

S. Tahoe tops Dayton in 5

LAKE TAHOE — The South Tahoe Vikings outlasted Dayton in five sets (25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 14-25 15-12) Wednesday night.

“My starters struggled to pass the ball and cover the court on defense,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. “Our serving was better, but not as strong and well-placed as I would have liked. The bench players stepped up and played well. I don’t think we were mentally ready for the game.”

Brianda Diaz led Dayton with 12 kills and eight digs, while Makenna Olsen added nine kills. Katie Turner finished with five kills and nine digs. Setter Shalia Powell had 27 assists, two kills, a block and five digs.

Dayton is now 4-1 in league and 16-2 overall.

TENNIS

Carson girls edge McQueen

Anya Woodbury went 3-0 to lead Carson to a 10-8 win over visiting McQueen Thursday afternoon. All three wins were 6-0 victories.

Shaylin Segura and Emma Breeding both posted 2-1 records, as seven of Carson’s 10 points came in singles.

The doubles teams of Nancy Henricksen and Mikaela Asby, Emily McCaskill and Amanda Schulz and Elise Brady and Heather Lamotte all won one set.

CHS boys knock off Lancers

RENO — Taylor Saarem and Ryan Tomita each went 3-0 to lead the Senators to a 12-6 win over McQueen Thursday afternoon.

All three of the doubles teams — Danny Dudley and Nico Salm, Stu McElhany and Jared Barnard, and Zach Simms and Jayson Artz posted 2-1 records.
