Prep roundup: Ortiz-Osty runs impressive race at Clovis

CLOVIS — Carson High’s cross country teams finished 15th and 29th repsectively in Division II at the pretigious Clovis Invitational Saturday.

Led by Josefina Ortiz-Osty’s 22nd-place finish, Carson finished 15th with 452 points. Granada-Livermore (75), Torrance (175) and South Torrance (177) finished in the top three spots.

Osty was timed in 20:04.2. Eveline Delgado was 43rd in 20:43.7, Athena Favero was 112th in 22:12.2, Rheanna Jackson was 134th in 22:53.1, Jiavanna Wong-Fortunato was 193rd in 24:54.3 and Alison Green was 200th in 25:28.9. A total of 218 runners competed in the 5k race.

On the boys side, Ian VanRensselaer led Carson with a 18:01.1 good for 103rd out of 240 runners. Miles Bean was 107th in 18:04.4, Kiefer Catron was 157th in 18:39.6, Hector Gomez-Barrios was 198th in 19:32.7, Hunter Rauh was 200th in 19:35.2 and Ethan Lopes was 207th in 19:51.2.

Carson was 29th with 751 points. Paso Robles (101), San Juan Hills (144) and Simi Valley (152) took the top three spots

Heusser 8th at Elko

ELKO — Brady Heusser finished eighth in 17-minutes 39-seconds to lead Dayton’s cross country team at the 1A meet in Winnemucca.

Hunter Hatch also ran well, finishing 14th in 18:05. Kobey Workman was 26th in 19:10 while Austin Duarte and Jared Logan were 40th and 42nd, respectively.

VOLLEYBALL

VC wins thriller

COLEVILLE — Virginia City (13-3, 8-2) pulled out a 26-28, 25-23. 25-23. 24-26, 15-10 win at Coleville. Kelsi Sequeira had 10 aces, eight kills and six assists, Kim Tlapa had three aces and 10 digs, Bethany Fuller had one ace and 12 kills, Chelsea Nevin had six kills, eight assists and one block, Jordan Seddon had three kills and two blocks and Kaitlin Hames added three aces, five kills and six digs for the Muckers.

Yerington sweeps W. Wendover

WEST WENDOVER — Yerington swept West Wendover in a doubleader on Saturday.

Yerington won the opener 25-12 and 25-22, and then followed that up with a 25-11 and 25-13 victory.

In the first match, Kassidy Lommori had 15 kills, nine digs, two blocks, an assist and an ace. Ashley Rife added 11 assists, four digs and two kills. Rachel Dane added five assists while Deseree Landa served up seven aces.

In the nightcap. Lommori had 13 kills and six digs, Rife had 13 assists and two kills, and Jordan Bobrick had two aces, two kills and three digs.

Yerington is 7-0 in league and 21-11 overall.

Sage Ridge sweeps Falcons

Sierra Ridge knocked off Sierra Lutheran 25-19, 25-12 and 25-18 in a Division IV volleyball match.

Brynna Hansen and Gabby Kale led the hitters with three kills apiece. Kale led in blocks with four and Olivia Zeron was the top digger with 12. Aleyna Gibson and Claire Cochran had four assists each.

Dayton sweeps Spring Creek

ELKO — Makenna Olsen had 10 kills, three blocks and seven digs to lead Dayton past Sprng Creek 25-19, 25-16 and 26-24 Friday night.

Kassie Strong was next with nine kills. Shalia Powell contributed two aces, three kills, nine digs and 25 assists. Brianda Diaz added five kills and three digs; Kallie Strong had five digs and three kills; Rachel Hadley finished with seven digs with Katie Turner contributing six digs and a kill.

GOLF

Carson trio makes regionals

Jill Beglin, Camryn Aten and Angelika Morrison will tee it up for Carson High at the two-day NIAA Division I golf tournament Monday and Tuesday.

The first round will be played Monday at Hidden Valley Country Club and the second round is Tuesday at Sommerset.

Douglas is represented by Emma Sperry, Lauren Hickam, Hunter Langford, Amanda Davidson, Mari Pimental and Sydney Cotton.

The top five individuals advance to the state tournament along with the top two teams.

McQueen, Spanish Springs and Bishop Manogue figure to battle for the team title.
