The Greenwave boys’ golf team may be small this year, but Coach Rich Evans said it makes up for it with the talent to propel them to state victories.

Evans recalled they had around 20 players last year. This year, though, a mix of graduates and players either choosing to play a different sport or sit out the season led to a smaller group trying out.

Evans isn’t worried though. He said what they lack in numbers is made up for by having quality golfers. There are six players on the team this year including three seniors. The coach said it was good having the experience and maturity of the seniors on the team.

This year’s golf team consists of seniors Ray Plasse, Mike Richards and Ethan Smith; juniors Kelvin Cann and Chance Wood; and sophomore Jace Harmon.

Most of the players have good experience on the golf course. The seniors all have multiple years experience in golf, and Evans said Cann is trying for one of the top spots in the state.

After last season, Evans is confident about the team’s abilities for 2017.

Last year the golf team consistently finished third during the season, and went to the state tournament in third seed. Evans said he hopes to improve their standing this year and go to state again.

“This year I look to be better than that,” he said. “That’s my goal, to be better than the top three … We’d like to be better than third.”

At the time of the interview, Evans couldn’t be sure how Fallon stacked up against the league competition. He said the Fallon team had improved though and hoped it would come out on top of the other teams.

Last Friday, Fallon won its first pre-season tournament; Evans recalled their scores were better than last year’s, and it showed promise they were going in the right direction.

The golf team had its first league tournaments earlier this week; on Tuesday, the team went to Dayton and Wednesday to Fernley. Results were unavailable at the time of press.
