Reed spikers top Carson in 4

Nevada Appeal Staff Report

SPARKS – After spotting Carson a set, Reed reeled off wins in the next three sets to grab a 31-33, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-22 win in a Northern 4A volleyball match Thursday night.

The loss evened Carson’s league record at 1-1.

“We were up big that first game and then let them back in,” Carson coach Justin Malley said. “They out-hustled us and had more desire. Our ball control was better tonight than it was against Reno, but we just didn’t get good swings.”

Jeanette Van Sickle had 10 kills, three blocks and an ace serve. Sarah Lushina contributed eight kills and 13 digs, while Elysse Virden had seven kills and two blocks. Angela Augusta finished with five kills and 10 digs while Jazmyn Stokes had 20 digs. Courtney Hack had 20 assists while Bailey Valente and Elizabeth Bennett-Doran had 13 and eight, respectively.

Carson’s freshmen lost 12-25 and 23-25, while the JV squad won 25-23 and 26-24.

Carson returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Damonte Ranch. The varsity begins at 6 p.m.

Douglas rolled to an easy win over North Valleys, 25-12, 25-12 and 25-16.

Brenna White had seven kills, seven digs and one block, while Jackie Harper contributed 16 assists and seven digs. Emily Garcia had two blocks, four kills and a dig.

Douglas is 11-1 overall and 2-0 in league.

RENO – Carson scored twice in the fourth quarter to knock off North Valleys 21-6 in a Northern 4A football game Thursday night.

Andrew Gutierrez led Carson with 102 yards rushing and two scores. Austin Shaffer rushed for 65 yards and one score.

Jesse Knight, Nevin Elliott, Andy Cooper, Joey Thurman, Gehrig Tucker, Aaron Cowee and Aaron Perez all played well defensively. Perez saved a potential TD with an interception in the end zone.
