In the showdown between the top two Northern 4A boys swimming teams, Reno High took the early edge over Carson High in a Sierra League meet on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility.

Reno defeated Carson 168-112. In the girls meet, Reno, which will be the overwhelming favorite to win the Northern 4A title, beat the Senators 201-80.

It figures that the Northern 4A boys title will again come down to Reno and Carson. Reno showed its depth on Saturday, but Carson did have its share of highlights.

Among those highlights were Carson’s Matt Grunert edging Kyle Norton to win the 100-yard backstroke. Grunert won in 57.56 seconds while Norton was second in 57.76.

Garrett Clayton also had an outstanding effort in the 100 breaststroke, beating Michael Weiss. Clayton won in 1:01.98 while Weiss was second in 1:02.37.

Kevin Dyer also won the 500 free in 5:22.04. In addition, Grunert took second to Weiss in the 100 free as Weiss won in 48.92 and Grunert was second in 50.07.

Also for Carson, Clayton took second in the 200 individual medley in 2:11.86 while Norton won in 2:05.68. Luke Gentner took second in the 50 free as well, finishing in 24.29. Reno’s Fritz Roepke won in 22.39.

Reno swept the three relays as well. Weiss, Norton, Roepke and Alex Chau won the 200 medley relay in 1:43.84 while Grunert, Clayton, Dyer and Ashton McIntosh was second in 1:49.57.

Sam Schouweiler, Chris Tung, Norton and Roepke won the 200 free relay in 1:34 while Paul Chang, Clayton, Gentner and McIntosh were second in 1:36.80. In the 400 free relay, Schouweiler, Northon, Chau and Weiss won in 3:29.91 while Grunert, Dyer, Gentner and Nick Schlager were second in 3:36.13.

For Carson’s girls, Julie Asire had a strong day, dominating the 100 free, winning in 56.64. Reno’s Megan Lake was a distant second in 59.63. Asire also took second in the 50 free in 25.87 as she was edged by Shannon Bray, who won in 25.59.

Another highlight for Carson’s girls came in the 200 free relay as Tatum Boehnke, Asire, Jamie Showalter and Beth Lewis won by more than two seconds in 1:45.83, beating Reno’s second place tam which finished in 1:47.96.
