ROP rolls to a victory
August 27, 2004
Rite of Passage’s players got the season – and their high school football careers – off to a rousing start.
Playing in the first game in Northern Nevada to begin the year, ROP rolled to a 40-0 win over Incline Village on Friday at home. Making the win even more impressive is none of ROP’s players had ever played a down of high school football before. It was also ROP’s first win in its home opener in 10 years.
Jason Toma had a huge day, running for 236 yards on eight carries and scoring on runs of 70, 36 and 96 yards. Toma’s 70-yard run gave ROP a 6-0 lead.
Hugo Araiza then made a sack in the end zone for a safety. Kenneth Huxhold returned the ensuing kick 70 yards for a touchdown to give ROP a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
Toma’s 36-yard TD run and a 46-yard scoring pass from Kevion Walls to Phillip Williams along with Justin Giles’ two extra points gave ROP a 28-0 halftime lead. Toma’s 96-yard TD run and Araiza’s 52-yard fumble return for a score made it 40-0 in the third quarter.
ROP rolled up 454 yards of total offense, 354 on the ground. Urich Mello had seven carries for 39 yards, Darrell Gentry had eight carries for 36 yards and Nick Trujillo had two carries for 22 yards.
