Sceirine makes Nevada softball team

Staff Reports

Yerington High graduate Amy Sceirine was among four players to make the University of Nevada softball team after open tryouts.

Sceirine was among four Nevada freshmen to make the team after the tryouts. Sceirine, a utility player, is joined by Reed’s Megan O’Connor, a catcher/first baseman, Wooster’s Maggie Lazzari, a shortstop/outfielder; and Reno High’s Megan Nunn, a second baseman/outfielder.

Nevada will begin competition in the Western Athletic Conference next spring.

“These are the first members of our new softball program,” Nevada coach Michelle Gardner said. “They came to our open tryouts we held earlier this month and were talented enough to compete at the Division I level.

“The will all contribute in some way. They are all versatile and able to play many roles. Three of them are local and the fourth is from Yerington so we’re getting players from Northern Nevada and I’m pleased about that.”

The national signing period for softball begins on April 10 and Gardner is expected to announce a large class of incoming freshmen as well as some junior college transfers at that time.
