Schmidt wins 100th game

Staff Reports

Douglas High girls soccer coach Fred Schmidt admitted he didn’t like the timing of his 100th win, considering the unimaginable terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

But the Tiger girls played on and beat an undermanned Hug team 8-0 on Tuesday to give Schmidt his 100th career victory.

“Other events of the day kind of took the luster off of it,” Schmidt said. “Our minds were elsewhere but we played.”

Schmidt said one upside of the 100th win was it did come before games against tougher opponents Galena on Saturday and Carson on Tuesday. “It was nice to get it behind me,” Schmidt said.

Andrea Chaney scored on assists from Amber Gwinn and Kali Schmidt, Schmidt scored unassisted and Gwinn scored on an assist from Lindsee Porter to give Douglas (3-0) a 3-0 lead in the first nine minutes.

Schmidt scored on assists from Brittany Christen and Gwinn, Jessica Girdner scored unassisted, Kristie Gearty scored on an assist from Schmidt and Dara Harris scored on an assist from Mackenzie Porter to give Douglas a 7-0 lead.

Mallory Moore came out of the goal to score on an assist from Jessica Brady in the first five minutes of the second half. Douglas took 29 shots in the first half and Moore took both shots in the second half.

“They’re trying to keep their players together,” said Schmidt about Hug. “We just worked on passing the ball.”

Moore, Molly Hernandez and Rebecca Wallstrum went untested at goalie as Hug didn’t have a shot on goal.
