University of Nevada senior Rod Scurry of Galena pitched a shutout and Dayton’s Matt Bowman homered as the Wolf Pack defeated Utah Valley State 1-0 in a the first game of a four-game nonconference series on Friday night at Peccole Park.

Friday’s game marked the first 1-0 shutout in Peccole Park history. With the victory the Pack improved to 18-14 while the Wolverines dropped to 7-21-1 on the season.

With the game scoreless, Bowman led off the fourth inning with a home run to right center field and that would be all the runs Scurry (4-4) would need. Scurry struggled with his control at times as he hit five batters and walked two but still struck out six in the game.

Defensively the Pack turned double plays in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings to back Scurry’s pitching performance. In the seventh an error and two hit batters loaded bases with one out and Nevada turned a double play to end the inning.

Holding a 1-0 lead in the ninth Scurry walked the leadoff hitter but the Pack again turned a double play to record the first two outs of the inning. The game ended on chopper up the middle that bounced over Scurry’s head but shortstop Kevin Rodland threw out the runner at first base to preserve the win.

Scurry allowed just four hits and threw 100 pitches to earn the victory. It was the first shutout and complete game for him at Nevada.

Utah Valley State starter Dan Christensen (1-5) surrendered just the one run on seven hits and struck out two.

Bowman (2-for-4) led Nevada with two hits. Jake Rickenbach led the Wolverines with two hits on the night.

The two teams square off today with a doubleheader that gets underway at 1 p.m.
