Sun Devils even DiMaggio record

Staff Reports

Willie Bowman slammed a two-run homer in the first inning to help put the Sierra Sun Devils on track to a 5-1 victory against Belmont, Calif., during the Joe DiMaggio (18-and-under) World Series on Saturday in Yountville, Calif.

Bowman, a recent Carson High graduate who has signed with UNLV hit the first pitch he saw over the center field fence as the Sun Devils took a 2-0 lead in their second game of the tournament.

In the fourth inning, Aaron Henry singled and Matt Bowman drove in two runs when he singled through a drawn-in infield. Henry is a Carson High graduate and Bowman just graduated from Dayton.

The shortstop-second base combo of Brian Evans, a Galena High grad, and Matt Bowman also combined to turn two rally-killing double plays that helped the Sun Devils defensively.

On Friday, Matt Bowman hit 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Henry contributed one hit and scored two runs for the Sun Devils in a 9-7 loss against San Mateo (Calif.) in 10 innings.

The Sun Devils are the defending DiMaggio World Series champions.
