SYFL Playoffs begin this weekend; cheer competition is Sunday

RENO – Nine weeks of regular-season football came to an end last weekend as the playoffs begin a new chapter on Saturday for the Sierra Youth Football League (SYFL).

Teams from Carson Valley, Reno, Damonte Ranch, Hug, McQueen, North Valleys, Wooster, Spanish Springs, Reed, Lassen, Fernley and Fallon will be fighting to advance in the postseason beginning on Saturday at Hug, McQueen and Fernley high schools. The semifinals are next weekend (locations have not been determined) and the championship games are on Nov. 10 at Damonte Ranch High School.

One day after the playoffs begin, the annual SYFL Cheer Competition returns to Spanish Springs High School, beginning at 9 a.m. Admission is $5 for adults (18 and older). Fans can expect to see girls ranging in ages 5-13 and performing a routine for the crowd. The routines include dancing, tumbling stunting and cheering.

The cheer schedule is as follows:

Group 1: Bandit, Maverick, Renegade

Group 2: Freshman, JV, Varsity

Group 1 will hit the mat at 11:30 a.m. and run until 2 p.m.

Group 2 will hit the mat at 2:30 p.m. and will run until 5 p.m.

Group 3 will hit the mat at 5:30 p.m.

The SYFL is a youth tackle football and cheerleading organization for all children between the ages of 5 and 14, prior to any child moving into high school. The SYFL works closely high school athletic directors and coaches to ensure players are learning skills that will benefit them as they transition into high school sports. The SYFL divisions, which are based on age, include Bandit (kindergarten and first grade), Maverick (second and third grades), Renegade (fourth grade), Freshman (fifth grade), Junior Varsity (sixth grade), Varsity (seventh grade) and Collegiate (eighth grade).
