Teary-eyed Williams bids farewell to coaching job

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) – Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams stepped into retirement with a fist pump and tears in his eyes.

Williams bid farewell before family, friends and thousands of Terps fans during an emotional ceremony at Comcast Center on Friday.

As Williams walked onto the floor, he treated the crowd to his trademark fist-pump. His eyes welled with tears as the crowd chanted his name.

The 66-year-old explained that he still felt like he could coach, but wanted to try doing something else while still healthy and active.

Asked about the timing of his decision, Williams said, “It’s better to leave early than late.”

Williams coached college ball for 33 years, the last 22 at his alma mater. He guided Maryland to the NCAA championship in 2002 and won more basketball games than any basketball coach in school history.
