Tigersharks shine in Polytathlon meet
Three swimmers for the Carson Tigersharks placed in the top five in the 15-16 boys division in the Carson Polytathlon host by the swim club over the weekend at the Carson Aquatic Facility.
In the meet, swimmers ages 11 and over had to swim in eight events while those 10 and under had to swim in six events. There were 405 swimmers who competed in the event.
For 15-16 boys, Matt Grunert finished with 3,937 points, finishing out of first by just 27 points. Kevin Dyer was third with 3,747 points and Garrett Clayton was fifth with 3,140 points.
Other top finishers for Carson included Nick Fischer who was second in 6 and under boys and Katie Fischer, who was third in 6 and under girls; Tim Grunert, who was fourth with 3,004 points and Jacob Branco, who was seventh in 11-12 boys; and Tatum Boehnke, who was seventh with 3,144 points in 15-16 girls.
Matt Grunert was a triple winner. He led a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard freestyle as he won in one minute, 49.85 seconds while Dyer was second in 1:50.16.
Grunert also won the 200 backstroke in 2:04.33 while Dyer was third in 2:07.54. In the 200 individual medley, Gruner won in 2:06.39 and Clayton was third in 2:09.21.
Dyer won the 100 free in 51.04 while Grunert was third in 51.24. In 6 and under boys, Gabe Kenney won the 25 butterfly in 42.50. Other top finishers in individual events for Carson included:

Gloria Sosa third in Junior Olympic event
Six Carson City youth runners joined forces with the Silver State Stiders on Sunday to compete in a USA Track and Field Junior Olympics qualifier at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.
The top 25 finishers advanced to the next stage of qualifying to be held Nov. 26 at Woodward Park in Clovis, Calif. The top finishers in that event will advance to the national championships to be held Dec. 10 in Spokane, Wash.
Carson City’s contingent was led by Gloria Sosa, who took third in the intermediate women’s division, finishing the 5-kilometer race in a person best 20 minutes, 6 seconds..
Also from Carson City, 7-year-old Blanca Sosa ran in the Bantam Division where she placed 31st in a personal record of 15:12 for the 3,000 meter race.
Erika Sosa had an excellent race in the Midget Division placing 21st in a personal record of 12:09 for three kilometers.
Peter Brinson placed 14th in his Midget Division race in a personal record of 11:28. Teammates Sean Johnson placed 31st in a personal record of 12:09 and Luke Johnson placed 43rd in a personal record of 12:56.
Other Silver State Striders that made a good showingincluded NIAA 4A State girls cross country champion Mel Lawrence from Reno High. She won the Young Women’s race in 18:05 for the 5K race. Walter Juarez, also from Reno High, who was the Northern 4A boys champion, won the Young Men’s division in a time of 15:46. He was closely followed by Galena’s Bryan Tibaduiza in 16:02 and Reno’s John Lawrence in 16:21.
Mel Lawrence said she’ll be attending the University of Washington next fall to run for the Huskies. She ran the race to prepare for her upcoming Foot Locker Western Regional race to be held on Dec. 2.
Rogers makes first team conference
Jeff Rogers, a 2003 Carson High graduate, earned all Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team honors for the Macalester men’s soccer team.
Rogers was the leader of the defense for Macalester, an NCAA Division III school that went 8-8-1 this season.
Raider Booster fundraiser is Sunday
The Carson City Raiders Booster Club will hold its annual Christmas Commitment fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Q’s Barbecue, 230 Fairview Drive in Carson City.
The day will include a big drawing, live auction and game watch of Raiders-Kansas City Chiefs game.
Also, “Black Hole” Raiders fan “Gorilla Rilla” will be on hand to sign autographs and pose for photos. Proceeds are used to adopt homebound seniors at Christmas.
