Vondrak’s no-hitter leads Carson

Cassie Vondrak pitched a no-hitter to help the Carson High softball team get back on track in a 17-0 win over South Tahoe on Thursday at CHS.

All four baserunners that reached for the Vikings reached on walks as Vondrak struck out eight over five innngs in the game that was called after 4 1/2 innings. Vondrak also helped her cause at the plate going 2-for-3 with four RBI.

“She pitched a great game,” Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. “She was hitting her spots. She looked real good. The girls hit the ball well.”

Carson scored four runs in the first inning, three each in the second and third and seven in the fourth. Belen Munoz capped the first inning rally with a two-run double. Katie McEwan and Vondrak each had RBI singles and Abby Rankl hit an two-run single during the seven-run fourth.

Christa Casci went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Rankl was 2-for-4 with two RBI, Nikki Keller, Krista Mattice and Loretta Cagle each had a hit, Daria Leid had two hits and four RBI, K.C. Withrow had a hit and an RBI and McEwan went 2-for-2.

Carson improved to 2-5 in the Sierra League as it tries to climb back into the league race. The Senators will host the Vikings in a doubleheader, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.

“Every series is important from here on out obviously,” Vickrey said. “We’re fighting from a hole, trying to climb out.”


Christina Gallegos pitched a complete game no-hitter, striking out seven over five innings. Gallegos allowed just two base runners on a walk and an error.

Ashley Saarem had two hits, an RBI and a run, Natalie Morrow and Lauren Knorzer each had a hit, an RBI and a run, Caitlin Sinclair had two hits, including a double, four RBI and a run, Elayna Shine had a triple and a run, Lisay Yamamoto had two hits and three runs and Megan Hein had a hit and a run for Carson (11-2, 7-0).
