Washoe County course on avalanche awareness

The Washoe County Parks and Recreation Department is offering a two-part course on avalanche awareness. That course will be held Feb. 16 (indoors) and on Feb. 19 (outdoors).

The indoor portion will begin at 7 p.m. at the Western Heritage Interpretive Center inside Bartley Ranch Regional Park. The park is located off Lakeside Drive in Reno, one-half mile south of McCarren Boulevard. To enter the park, turn onto Bartley Ranch Road and cross the covered bridge.

The outdoor portion, dependent on the snowpack, will begin at 9 a.m. at either Galena Creek Park or the Mt. Rose Meadows, on the Mt. Rose Highway (S.R. 431).

The free course is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of outdoor winter recreation enthusiasts.

The courses are for person ages 12 and up.

Beginner-level backcountry enthusiasts are welcome.
